We the Printmaking students at RISD want to make very clear that we stand in full support of and solidarity with the custodians, groundskeepers, movers, and Teamsters Local 251.
We condemn RISD’s weak, disrespectful, and often misleading response to this strike and requests for livable wages for staff who make our work here possible. This is especially true in our department, we have many facilities that require significant upkeep and that we cannot function without. These workers are crucial to our department and deserve the utmost respect and FAIR LIVEABLE WAGES.
We also want to echo sentiments we saw from students yesterday who asserted that this strike has created a stronger sense of community between the student body and faculty. It has not created any distrust that was not already there but has only deepened the already present rift and distrust between students and administration. This rift is in great part due to the continued lack of transparency and respect from our administration; this situation has only made this more apparent.
We are asking our Administration, President, and Board of Trustees to do the absolute minimum and provide liveable wages for our custodians, groundskeepers, movers, of Teamsters Local 251.
