We, the students of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), state our support for our Groundskeepers, Movers, Custodial staff, and their Union efforts for fair wage. We recognize the hard labor of these workers, who care for our spaces, keeping our spaces high functioning, moving, and clean, with little to no recognition from RISD as an institution.
We the students of RISD, support our Groundskeepers, Movers, and Custodial staff, in their efforts for the following items:
We also demand that RISD bargain fairly, honestly, and with full transparency to both the Union of Custodians, Movers, and Groundskeepers with assistance from the Teamsters, as well as to the RISD Student Body.
By transparency, we ask in the case of the “Best and Final Offer” not being met, transcribed statements within the negotiation room, of why the wages proposed by the Union have not been met (with concrete numbers and statements).
We ask for a definite accepted wage that meets the numbers within the Union’s Offer, or higher (detailed in the table below). The deadline for RISD Administration to respond with a legitimate response and offer to increase union wages is Wednesday (4/12). By legitimate response and offer, we mean a starting offer from RISD meeting the minimum of the following:
Again, the deadline to meet these demands is Wednesday 12pm (4/12).
If the RISD Administration fails to respond to the Labor Union’s proposal with a legitimate response and offer to increase Custodial, Groundskeepers, Mover Union’s wage, we, the Student Body of RISD will be walking out Friday (4/14).
We suggest that RISD use the money being paid to fund temporary custodial staff, to be redirected to a budget meeting the needs of the Union. The more money RISD pours to temporary solutions, shows the more blatant exploitation and denial of workers rights RISD upholds.
By signing this document, we state our solidarity with the Movers, Groundskeepers, and Custodial staff, and our agreement to walk out Friday (4/14).
By signing, we, the current student body of RISD, and the greater Providence community stand in support of and in solidarity with the requests of the Union of Movers, Groundskeepers, and Custodial Staff.
