To the Administration, Board of Trustees, and the President of the Rhode Island School of Design:
The Ceramics Department--both students, faculty and technician --would like to formally express our full and enthusiastic support for the custodians, groundskeepers, and movers on strike for a livable and fair wage.
In Ceramics, it is especially critical to uphold a clean environment in order to protect our department's health and safety, as we work with many potentially hazardous airborne materials. This aspect of our work environment makes us aware of how imperative our custodians are to our community. The movers help with our heavy equipment and provide exhibition support; carefully moving our work from Metcalf into gallery spaces. The groundskeepers maintain the outdoor spaces used for installations, outdoor classrooms and for all to enjoy. We strongly believe this labor should be honored and respected with a livable wage.
The efforts of the strike in regard to both students and the union should also be seriously engaged with and acknowledged by our administration. RISD expends a lot of intellectual energy addressing equity and inclusion. It is necessary that these efforts move beyond the classroom and are applied to the social and economic realities of the institution.
We hope this concludes quickly and that the needs of our workers are fully met.
